African Ubuntu Backpackers Lodge
Jeffreys Bay, Kouga Country - Accommodation
African Ubuntu Backpackers Lodge in Jeffreys Bay
A relatively small backpackers there is always plenty of space to do your own thing with many places to relax and read a book, just plain old chill or have a laugh while watching our ducks waddle around the garden.
For this reason, along with our friendly and helpful staff, we are well known as a home away from home and more importantly, a clean home with many guests hanging around for longer than they expected.
We do get our party on now and again and either hang at the lodge playing pool and table tennis or we head out to one of the many happening pubs and restaurants and try our hardest to paint the town red. The more chilled at heart can curl up in front of the bonfire while reading a book, watch a movie in the lounge on the big screen, or gaze at the stars from one of our balconies.
We make delicious home-cooked meals most nights and every Friday we cook a traditional meal for our guests to try out some of the local cuisine. Think braais, potjies, salads from our vegetable garden, vegetarian dishes and much more.
So if you are looking for refreshing accommodation, one where you can put your feet up and no one will gasp at your sandy feet, you have arrived at the ideal accommodation with the best swell and hosts in town.

Serious vibe here! View from the bed early morning. Sorry for lighting quality haha
Let me start by saying that this is one of the best backpackers in South Africa let alone J-Bay. When you first arrive, you are at awe by how beautiful the place is with its lovely garden/patio area, balconies with ocean views, and and cute places to sit and listen to the waves. The dorms are clean, comfortable and has everything you need. The toilets/ showers are cleaned everyday by the very friendly staff. There is a hearty breakfast every morning (for free), guitars and African drums to play at your liking, nice music and incense burning from time to time. Now if you dont get caught up spending the whole day relaxing in the hammock (which is easy to do), there are many options to spend the day.Unlike many backpackers along the garden route, African Ubuntu is close to everything. There is a Superspar a few steps away (no need to plan ahead or worry about what to eat). The beach is a two minute walk where there are beautiful tide pools, sea shells and arguably the best surf spot in the world. If you dont want to surf and want to shop, the main beach is a nice walk away and has all the new surf gear and seafood you need. African Ubuntu also offers many activities including surf lessons, sun downers and more. The lessons are affordable and worth every cent because within two hours I felt like a pro. If you already know how to surf but want to rent a board, there is a board and a suit for every person and every wave. I would highly recommend surfing in the same waters as the pros. After the surf lessons comes the chill fire and brai. This is where the backpackers really sealed the deal. During the evenings, the people (volunteers, staff, travelers) got together and enjoyed each others company. This is why I realized why its called Ubuntu (philosophical meaning for being whole when being together), because you can stay for only a night and feel like you are with friends youve known forever. It feels like home.
Friendly, good vibes, clean, close to the beach and good value.
Great spot and super close to everything you need from shops to the beach and surfing. Relaxed vibe and great staff. Has all the amenities needed and fun stuff.
Best place in JBay ! The staff is lovely, the rooms are clean and comfy and it's within a walking distance from the best waves. Would definitely go back. Cheers
Very nice backpackers to chill out! Staff is super friendly, the rooms are good and there is lots of space to chill out. There is also a small coffee shop on the premises. Did a surf lesson there which was very good! Highly recommend this place in J-Bay.
