Nieuwoudtville, Hantam Karoo - Accommodation
Van Zijl Guesthouses in Nieuwoudtville
All guest houses are fully equipped for self-catering, although it is highly recommended that you indulge in the country cuisine served at Smidswinkel Restuarant. The restaurant is within walking distance of all the guest houses, so you are not inconvenienced by long drives for an excellent meal, local wine and good company. The restaurant and information centre is situated in a large sandstone building which, many years ago, was occupied by the last blacksmith in Nieuwoudtville. It offers traditional farm-style meals, and for the adventurous we will even prepare baked "skilpadjies" (liver) or a traditional sheep head.
Guests are invited to enjoy a traditional, yet exciting holiday with everything needed for true relaxation.

Reviews for Van Zijl Guesthouses
Lovely garden, wholesome karoo food and local wine. Pet friendly and open weekends!
Great food and brilliant service.
Nice place with a beautiful garden to rest. Food was simple but nice and plenty. Staff was friendly. Prices are ok, like 250zar for 2 meals and 2 coke including tip, that's about 16 atm
Nice food with a visiting, life sheep.
Great atmosphere and people
I can actually not rate my stay, because it was a nightmare!!!! Was booked in Bokveld flat for 2 nights by company I work for. Two male colleagues was booked into main house. Slept in the most uncomfortable bed ever. Think the mattress is about 5cm thick (if it was that thick). When we returned from work, rooms were not cleaned, beds were not made - nothing. Breakfast was packed in takeaway packs - exactly the same for both mornings. Was delivered at 17:00 for the next morning. Seems like 08:00 is too early for owner to serve guests with breakfast. Colleague wanted an iron in the morning, but was told the owner is still sleeping at 07:00 in the morning and not to bother him. On 2nd night the power was out in Nieuwoudtville, we were told it would be restored at 18:00 which was not the case. When I phoned the owner to request a torch or candels I was told that I can share the house and bathroom with my male colleagues. I said it is not acceptable and owner suggested that I go to my dark room and go to sleep. Wanted to know how he expected me to operate in the room and he said if he can do it in the dark so can I. I requested once again for some form of light since I am a paying guest. Mr. Hendrick van Zijl refused to assist. I said that I can then not guarantee that the room will look the same since I would not be able to see where I am going. I was then told that I am threatening him and he will contact the police. He actually phoned back to say he is awaiting an investigating officer to contact him. I was told almost 7 times that he used to practice as a lawyer and he knows his rights. I suggested the police must come immediately since they may be willing to give me a torch since he was not willing to do so. I did not receive any form of light or any assistance from the owner, Mr. Hendrick van Zijl - who is a retired attorney and who knows his rights. He does not bother about the rights of paying guests at his establishment. I could not take my medication - I suffer from an auto-immune disease. Never, ever will this place see me again. Please spare yourself from being treated in this way and rather book at a guesthouse where the guests are treated with dignity and care!!!
Food okay and service average. Nice antique memorabilia for decor.
Lovely log fire. Old black smiths forge... Beautiful old stone building. Decor is stunning. Did not stay for dinner.
We tried to make a booking for the evening and were turned away. The lady clearly did not feel like working. We were disappointed to hear that the food is pre-prepared, frozen and just heated up.
"Mrs. B Large"
Have already sent in letter to complain there was no hot water geyser not turned on so we could not take a shower. Very poor management. Also fridge didn't have freezer compartment so couldn't keep our meat frozen. No TV. Wouldn't go there again.
"Lovely old farmhouse in a beautiful setting"
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Moreson and Mr Van Zijl could not have been more helpful or hospitable. The peacock was an elegant touch. Definitely to be recommended.
