Hofmeyr, Karoo Hartland

The village of Hofmeyr lies in the shadows of the Bamboes Mountains, ideally situated as a stopover for those en route between Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth. It is named after "Onze Jan" Hofmeyr, editor of two of South Africa's first Afrikaans newspapers and is also the site of a very significant archeological discovery, namely the Hofmeyr Skull. For many scientists, this 36 000-year-old human skull - unearthed in1952 - confirms the theory that modern humans originated in Africa.
