Travel guide to Kamieskroon, Namaqualand
Kamieskroon is situated at the foot of the Kamiesberg Mountains, in the very heart of Namakwaland. It is believed that the word "kammies" is derived from the Nama-Khoi word "th'amies" which translates as a mess or muddle, referring to the disorderly granite boulders that lie peppered across the landscape. Only 21km west of Kammieskroon, tourists will find the Namaqua National Park which conserves the richest bulb flora found in any arid region in the world. In spring, visitors to this area will be completely astounded by the glorious display of colour that is created when thousands of species of wildflowers bloom. To add to the unique Namakwaland experience, tourists might also visit the nearby cultural camp at Paulshoek for a taste of Nama culture and cuisine.
