Travel guide to Nababeep, Namaqualand
Nababeep is Namakwaland's largest copper-mining town. After copper was discovered in the 1860's, the Cape Copper Company built a small railway line to transport the mined ore to Port Nolloth. Originally mules were used to draw the ore-filled carts, but later they were replaced by steam engines - only to be intermittently harnessed again when water shortages prevented the use of the steam engines. Today, the line is no longer in use, but visitors to Nababeep can still see the last steam engine that travelled it. The engine, named Klara, is on display at the Mining Museum which charts the development of Namakwaland's copper mining industry.
