Travel guide to Prieska, Upper Karoo
Prieska lies at the eastern end of what is popularly referred to as the "Rock Garden Route". As the name of the route suggests, fine specimens of indigenous succulents, quiver trees, and outlandish "halfmense" can be seen in the area around Prieska. Those fascinated by this unique type of flora can visit the Prieska Koppie Nature Reserve or the Ria Huisamen Aloe Garden for a closer look. The term "rock garden" can, however, also be understood to mean something different, particularly in the case of Prieska, renowned for its semi-precious stones. To get a glimpse of some of the beautiful stones that 'grow' in the Prieska district, tourist can visit the Municipal offices which house the Schumann Rock Collection. Alternatively, there is the impressive old British Fort, built entirely of unprocessed tiger-eye during the Anglo Boer War.
